The design of the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing was conceived in 1964, when the company was still a small one, but it showed the world what the future held for high speed, superb design and engineering. The idea was to create a car that could be driven at incredible speeds, and yet at the same time provide an extremely comfortable ride. It was a great challenge for the designers, who had to find ways to make the most out of the limited space available while still maintaining the sleekness that was expected of a top designer. When the Mercedes 300SL Gullwings first arrived on the scene the design of the bodywork was very radical, and it incorporated the new wedge shaped windscreen into the roof line. This meant that the air flow was actually flowing over the roof, and not through the center of the cabin.
