Artist's Description
A child covers her ears with her hands. She stares back at us intently. There is something quizzical about the look on her face. As she covers her ears, she seems to be asking us why we could ever be complicit in racism. We would be quick to tell her that she’s wrong, but is that really the case? Are we truly confronting the multifaceted evils of racism on a daily basis? Are we working to make public spaces safer for our neighbors and allies? This piece asks you all of these questions, and it asks them seemingly at once. This is a powerful commentary on racism.
About Jan Keteleer
I love to present works that challenge our perceptions of the world around us. For example, our relationship to advertising visuals and slogans is often a complex one. When we take these artificial concepts, and combine them with an example of humanity that has been stripped down to its core, the results can be quite fascinating. I am a Belgian artist with interests in both classical and contemporary art. I particularly love the opportunity to bring those things together in the most unique ways I can imagine. While you can find examples of holiday pieces, or tranquil scenes of nature or animals, I am particularly fond of pieces that combine classic art elements with modern sensibilities.
