This particular piece by artist Jan Keteleer, is called Women on a Diving Board and was made as part of the "Diving Woman" series which was a series of works meant to aid women in breaking free from the traditional roles that society had set for them. Jan Keteleer is an acclaimed Belgian artist who specialized in oil painting and sculpture and is able to bring a realistic depth and color to what was an already magnificent art form at the time. His bold style of blending the softness of the sea foam with the roughness and vitality of the land brought a beautiful authenticity to his oil paintings that remains true masterpieces to this day.
A woman sitting on a diving board is just as much a depiction of the female experience as it is a look into the early 1960s. When we take these artificial concepts, and combine them with an example of humanity that has been stripped down to its core, the results can be quite fascinating.
